Made without PFAS

PFAS are durable chemicals used in many products that are heat, water and grease resistant. In outdoor gear, PFAS have traditionally been used for durable water repellency (DWR). These "forever chemicals" are harmful because they do not degrade in the environment or in the body. Since 2025, all EXPED textile products have been manufactured without intentionally added PFAS.

High-performance finish without PFAS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of chemicals used in various industries, including outdoor equipment, for their water, oil and stain repellent properties. These chemicals are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they do not degrade in the environment or in the human body. Contamination with PFAS can spread through water, soil and air, and exposure to PFAS has been linked to numerous health problems, such as cancer, immune system problems and developmental delays. Their persistence and widespread use in everyday products have made them a global environmental and public health challenge.

No DWR - no PFAS

The EXPED sleeping mats have always been manufactured without DWR and without added PFAS. Only a few product groups such as tents, backpacks and dry bags used DWR for water repellency and were treated with these chemicals. After years of searching for alternative water repellent treatments, EXPED will have removed all intentionally added PFAS from the product range by the end of 2024.

Compliance with chemical regulations

We work closely with our suppliers and conduct independent testing to ensure that our products do not contain PFAS. We adhere to global industry best practice, i.e. the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) and European Outdoor Group (EOG) guidelines, to comply with government regulations banning PFAS in textile products.

We fully support the evolving regulations, such as the PFAS bans in California and New York and the upcoming European legislation. Investigating other harmful substances in our production processes helps us to further minimize our environmental impact. Industry standards such as the bluesign® system include restrictions on harmful chemicals such as PFAS. We work with bluesign® system partners for our textile product range.
